Julien VIAUD, dit Pierre Loti • Le Roman d’un enfant
When his grandmother Adèle Weil died in 1890, Proust advised his mother, who was deeply affected by the loss, to read Le roman d'un enfant by Pierre Loti, which appeared in La Nouvelle Revue. She wrote to him on the subject: "My darling, I am steeped in Loti (...) I can't get enough of rereading these lines: “and I would like, for the first appearance of this blessed figure in this book of memories, to greet her with words apart, if that were possible, with words made for her and like none that exist, words that, on their own, would bring good tears, would have I don't know what sweet consolation”. You have done me good, my darling, by finding me this book to read.
