The architectural dossier exhibition at the Pavilion of Architecture annually invites visitors of the Villa du Temps retrouvé to engage with a localized experience within the tour itinerary.
Perched atop rooftops, the ridge finial serves not only as a decorative element but also as a potent symbol. Continuously reflecting the aesthetic sensibility of its owner, these ridge finials also underscore the enduring legacy of a regional tradition.
With origins tracing back to the 11th century, this craft reached its zenith towards the close of the 15th century and experienced a resurgence with the emergence of seaside resorts along the Côte Fleurie from 1850 onwards. During this period, villas drew inspiration from the traditions of the Pays d’Auge, revitalizing the production of local artisans.
This exhibition dossier showcases the rich diversity of ridge finials in terms of their shapes, dimensions, and hues. It also elucidates the intricate craftsmanship of the Pottery of Mesnil de Bavent, the sole remaining manufacturer in Pays d’Auge dedicated to preserving the Norman tradition of ridge finials.
The exhibition invite visitors to challenge their artistic talent !
In collaboration with the FabLab at Atelier 1901 in Cabourg, a customizable ridge finial is made accessible to all, providing a unique opportunity to grasp the artistry behind crafting these exquisite architectural components.
