Mobilier national

12 February 2021

The first collections have arrived at the Villa du Temps retrouvé! We are honored to welcome loans from France’s Mobilier National.

Supporting crafts and creation since the 17th century, the Mobilier National’s mission is to ensure the conservation and restoration of its unique collections in the world, and to perpetuate and transmit exceptional expertise. As a major heritage site, the institution is also a major player in contemporary creation and the promotion of French decorative arts.

Le Mobilier national also creates and restores tens of thousands of pieces of furniture and objects intended for furnishing and decorating public buildings in France and abroad. Three hundred artisans work in the Mobilier National in Paris and in the region. The Gobelins and Beauvais factories are devoted to tapestry, the Savonnerie factory to carpets, the Puy-en-Velay and Alençon workshops to lace. Seven restoration workshops are divided into the different specialties of wood, metal and textiles. Resolutely forward-looking, the institution has a Research and Creation Workshop – ARC – created in 1964 by André Malraux in order to promote creation and contemporary design in France. The ARC is an incomparable showcase for design, which has never ceased to create excellent prototypes for government orders in close collaboration with the best of French designers.
